What is Flow

Flow is an altered state of mind, being “in the zone”, experiencing timelessness, selflessness, and feeling connected. Everything seems effortless. Your creativity and productivity increases in this state, your focus increases you have more clarity and feel ecstatic. Instead of using all of your brain, you actually use less of it, allowing you to do it for longer time. You are 100% immersed in what you are doing.

Why Flow Matters

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi coined the term in 1975 and it has been widely referred to across a variety of fields. Watch his TED Talk where he explains State of Flow.

Results of Being in a Flow are:

  • Improved focus and concentration
  • A sense of ecstasy
  • Clarity – knowing what needs to be done and how well we are doing
  • You know exactly what you want to do and you have the skills to do it
  • Sense of time disappears
  • You forget yourself
  • You feel a part of something larger
  • You become creative and productive
  • You get more A-ha moments
  • Your intrinsic motivation increases

It’s a Zen type attitude about it of being one with your activity, where your inner critic disappears. Being in a state of flow enriches what you are doing in the present moment, but it also enriches your life in general.

In my Unhustle podcast, I interviewed Alexandra Borbolla about flow. She experiences flow when she rides her horse and when she works with her clients. I get into a state of flow when I go kiteboarding and when I work on Unhustle. Can you achieve state of flow into your work environment on a regular basis?
